Progress Monitoring
Technology-Based Progress Monitoring
Here you will find resources for technology-based progress monitoring, both formative and summative, with links and video tutorials. Additionally, there is an article about implementing technology-based progress monitoring tools.
ForAllRubrics
ForAllRubrics is a formative and summative assessment progress monitoring tool teachers and students use. Teachers can use pre-loaded rubrics or create their own rubrics to assess content knowledge and skills for virtually any assignment or project. ForAllRubrics aggregates proficiency data based on the rubric criteria the teacher has chosen to select.ForAllRubrics meets ISTE Standards for Educators 5g: Design authentic learning activities that align with content area standards and use digital tools and resources to maximize active, deep learning.
Google Docs
Google Docs is a cloud-based word processor which can be used as a formative assessment tool because of its collaborative capabilities. Once students share their document with the teacher and/or classmates, the teacher and/or classmates can provide feedback for the student writer. This is augmented by use of guided questions (which can itself be in another Google Doc document). Teachers can move from shared document to shared document providing just-in-time feedback.
Google Docs meets ISTE Standard for Students 6a: Students chose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation or communication.

Kahoot
Kahoot is a website that enables teachers to quiz students in a true/false and multiple choice format, enabling teachers to quickly assess students' knowledge. Teachers can use Kahoot as a reading comprehension quiz, as pre-test review, and as collaborative work. Kahoot allows formative feedback as teachers can clarify misunderstandings or errors or gaps in knowledge as students respond to each question. Kahoot is a game-based assessment, making it fun and engaging. Kahoot also provides an option to collect data as students responses are aggregated into an Excel spreadsheet that can be downloaded for teacher use.
Kahoot meets ISTE Standard for Students 1: Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

Practical Suggestion for Using Technology-Based Progress Monitoring in an English Class:
In an English class, teachers want to assess students' understanding of the text(s) they read. To assess students' understanding formatively using Kahoot, after having students read the target text, the teacher can have students use their iPads or iPhones or other device to respond to comprehension questions in quiz format with true/false and/or multiple choice questions. As students respond, the teacher can assess if further clarification is needed and may even opt to redirect students' attention to the target text, having students identify supporting text that helps students answer the questions correctly.
